In Victoria he was soon appointed as a Magistrate of the Colony, which would negate any suggestion that his naval career had ended less than well.Ĭharles' naval experience was clearly well respected and sought-after, because he was appointed as Harbour Master for the Colony of Victoria. It has been reported that they subsequently had seven children. Newly discharged, he married Josephine Simmons in Hobart, Colony of Van Diemens Land, and departed that colony for the Colony of Victoria via Launceston. In 1854 he was serving aboard HMS Herald when he was discharged from the navy after the relatively short career of twelve years. The next year he was appointed as one of the Leiutenants of HMS Victory. This was clearly successful, because in 1847 he passed his naval examinations, had his log books examined and approved and was promoted to the beginning officer rank of Leiutenant.Ĭharles' first ship was the gunnery ship Excellent, to which he was appointed Mate under Captain Ducie Chads. At the usual age of 15 years, Charles entered the Royal Navy as a Midshipman, the rank of entry for officers, and was appointed to his first ship: HMS Queen.įor the next five years Charles studied every aspect of operating a ship: navigation, directing gunnery, hand-to-hand fighting, naval discipline and deportment of officers, seamanship and how to manage, with authority, men much older than himself. His father was Admiral Charles Frederick Payne RN and his mather was Barbara Ann Ffolliott, daughter of Commander Ffolliott RN, so one can imagine that even if there were no expectations of his becoming a naval officer, such a decision would not have caused much family consternation. Charles Bradney Paine was born in Osmington, Dorset, England, into a thoroughly naval family.
